BSL Teaching Assistant

Location: Essex / East London

Start Date: September 2026

Contract: Full-Time | Term Time Only

Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience)

Empowering Learning is recruiting on behalf of a welcoming and inclusive college for a dedicated British Sign Language (BSL) Teaching Assistant to join their support team from September.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference by supporting deaf and hearing-impaired students to access learning, develop confidence, and achieve their full potential within a further education setting.

The Role

As a BSL Teaching Assistant, you will:

Provide communication support for students using British Sign Language (BSL).

Interpret lessons and classroom discussions accurately and professionally.

Support students both within the classroom and during college activities.

Work closely with lecturers, the SEND team, and external professionals to meet individual learning needs.

Encourage independence, confidence, and academic progress.

Assist with preparing learning materials and adapting resources where required.

The Ideal Candidate

Holds a recognised BSL qualification (Level 2 or above - Level 3 preferred).

Has previous experience supporting deaf or hearing-impaired learners.

Has experience working within education, ideally in a college or secondary setting.

Is patient, compassionate, and committed to inclusive education.

Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Holds an enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or is willing to obtain one).
