Description

For sale is an original Tandberg hi-fi system comprising:

Tandberg TR2060 Stereo Receiver

Tandberg TCD 440A Cassette Deck

Pair of Tandberg TL2520 Loudspeakers

These components have been together for many years and are being sold as a restoration project. The receiver and cassette deck have been tested to the extent described below, but both have developed faults and are therefore being sold strictly for repair or restoration. The speakers also require restoration.

Also included is a collection of original Tandberg documentation including owner's manuals and brochures (see photographs). Original literature is increasingly difficult to find and is included with the sale.

Includes a comprehensive collection of original Tandberg TCD 440A literature comprising the Operating Instructions, Supplement to Operating Instructions, Technical Data & Description booklet, specification sheet, original TCD 440A sales brochure and an original Tandberg dealer catalogue.

The receiver initially powered on and the dial lights illuminated briefly before going completely dead. The plug fuse has been replaced with no improvement and I have carried out no further investigation.

Sold as faulty for repair.

Tandberg TCD 440A Cassette Deck
Prior to developing a fault, I tested the deck using a pre-recorded cassette and headphones.

The following functions were confirmed working:

Powers on

Play

Stop

Fast Forward

Rewind

Tape counter

Clear playback through both channels

Both VU meters performed their initial sweep on power-up, although the right-hand meter illumination was not working and the VU meters did not respond during playback.

While the unit was left powered on (not playing), there was a loud pop followed by white smoke and a burning smell. It was immediately disconnected from the mains and has not been powered on since.

I subsequently attempted to remove the cassette manually. The cassette remains trapped and the cassette door has been damaged and no longer closes correctly.

The unit also has some damage to the rear corner/edge of the casing, with a section of the outer finish and underlying material chipped/broken. Please see the close-up photographs.

Sold as faulty for repair or restoration.

The cabinets are in good original cosmetic condition.

On inspection, the foam surrounds on the bass drivers have perished, which is a common age-related issue and means the speakers require refoaming before use.

Cosmetic Condition
Overall, the equipment is in good original cosmetic condition for its age with expected marks and wear from normal use. It has not been modified and would make an excellent basis for a restoration.

The TCD 440A also has some damage to the rear corner/edge of the casing, with a section of the outer finish and underlying material chipped/broken. Please see the close-up photographs.

Included are the original manuals and packaging where shown in the photographs.
