Description

Personal Assistant / Support Worker for autistic 29-year-old in Herne Hill SE24

Steve needs a PA with autism / learning disability experience to support him on Fridays from 10.30am – 4.30pm. Occasional evening or weekend work may also be available. To start beginning of October 2026.

Steve has autism, learning disabilities and epilepsy. He is verbal but has significant language and social communication difficulties. His behaviour can sometimes be challenging when things go wrong for him but he is generally rewarding and fun to work with. He loves buses and trains, going to the cinema, jigsaw puzzles, eating custard, taking pictures with his iPad. He doesn't like fruit and vegetables, noisy babies and loud music.

Steve has epilepsy with seizures on average once a month. His PA needs to be confident to respond to a seizure to ensure his safety and well-being and to administer emergency medication when required. Experience of dealing with epilepsy is welcomed, but training is provided.

Daytime sessions involve going out - activities like volunteering, travelling on public transport, going shopping, trampolining or bowling. Also spending time at home when Steve may be doing jigsaw puzzles, using his computer, preparing and eating snacks.

Evening sessions at home often involve a movie night watching a Disney DVD.

Steve is a fast walker so needs a PA who is physically fit to match his pace and keep him safe out in the community.

Steve needs a PA who;

has experience of supporting young adults with autism and / or learning disabilities
is vigilant and confident to keep him safe at home and out in the community
is physically fit, able to keep up with fast-paced walking
is calm and patient, a good communicator
has a sense of fun and energy to engage with him in activities
can speak good everyday English if not a native speaker

Only applicants who have previous paid or voluntary experience of working with young people or adults with autism and / or learning disabilities will be considered.

This is not a temporary job. We need someone who can commit to developing a relationship with an autistic person who finds communication difficult. Could suit a student with availability for at least the academic year.

This is a PAYE job,
hourly rate London Living Wage £15.15 plus paid holiday entitlement.
2 recent and checkable references are required.
DBS check is required which the employer will organise.
Proof of entitlement to live and work in the UK is required if not a UK citizen.
