Description

A handsome and slightly out of the ordinary car, although referred to as a Continental saloon, it would be described by many as a sports saloon. Incorporating trouser crease wings, rear-mounted spare wheel, quarter bumpers and top-opening boot, the car is refreshingly different and attractive. Painted in a cheery shade of yellow, with black wings and leather covered roof, which incorporates a sliding sun roof, and with excellent pale tan leather interior. Chromework too, is very good. Fitted with a stainless steel exhaust system, running well and offered serviced, & with a fresh MoT. Chassis No. GRC81 Reg No. XSG 779 Snippets: The Sailing StockbrokerHugh Carron Scrimgeour (1883/1958) was a member of the stockbroking Scrimgeour family of Sussex. The unusual surname is taken from the old English word Skrymser meaning swordsman & members of the Scottish Scrimgeours included Earls of Dundee, Royal Standard Bearers & Constables. Hugh Scrimgeour was a keen sailor & owned an 8mtr Bermudan Sloop which had been constructed by William Fife of Scotland, Hugh raced Oonah at Cowes with his daughter Pamela crewing. In honour of her father Pamela later commissioned the Pamela Snagge Trophy which is an annual award to the winner of the Mermaid Class. In his fleet of yachts Hugh had Eastmora (built 1926) & Sans Peur. Hugh, was a keen motorist who had early brushes with the law, in 1909 he was summoned for driving at excessive speeds, in 1912 summoned for lack of an identification plate on his motor & in 1913 for exceeding the speed limit! Perhaps there was less chance of a summons whilst out at sea. The 2nd owner was William Stanley Reeve-Tucker (1888/1939), a rubber planter based in Malaya & a member of the Malayan Federal Council. Whilst in Malaya William pioneered a method in killing mosquitos which reduced the number of estate workers suffering from Malaria on the Sungei Way Estate. He was just 19 when he first moved to Malaya & he joined the MSVR & in 1913 received his commission, during WWI he was ranked as a Captain. In 1938 he was awarded an OBE for his public services in the Federated Malay States, after his death in 1939 it is thought that GRC81 was laid up for the duration of WWII.After the war ended the car is shown in 1945 as being with Kenneth & Kitty Hutchison. They were both keen motorists & in 1954 Kenneth entered the Monte Carlo Sun Motor Rally in his 1951 Bentley MK VI Chassis Nr B130MD with N. Birkett as co-driver; they were judged as being joint winners in a triple tie and they were winners of the 4th category Mass produced touring cars over 2600cc.

About us:
The Real Car Company was established in 1987 by Ray Arnold & Ian Johnstone. It was a hobby that 'Got out of hand'. Our interest in cars of the type that we now sell goes back to our childhoods, and ownership back to the 1970's. Gradually more cars started passing through our hands, and by 1986 we had decided to make a full time occupation of buying and selling the cars that we love.

We started with a single car (all we could afford) which we sold quickly, and before we knew it we had 4 or 5 on our hands! This was alongside another business that we were involved in at the time. In the Spring of 1988 we gave up the other business, (exhaust systems), rented part of the premises that we still operate from now, and went full time.

We had a good start in the boom years of the late eighties, which set us up well enough for us to ride the storm of recession in the years that followed. As the years went on the number of cars going through our hands increased gradually, we built up a workforce, and we now carry a stock of around 40 to 50 vehicles and there are nine of us here. In 1999 we were awarded 'International Classic Car Dealer of the Year' by Classic Cars Magazine. The market for 'our' kind of cars is nicely stable, generally prices are creeping upwards all the time, and we feel that investing in a car - or cars - of the type that we sell is generally a great place to put your money. Don't do it just for investment, but you can get a great deal of pleasure from these vehicles, prices are - in our opinion - unlikely to drop, and you can't drive a share certificate! Some prices in the last three or four years have moved up considerably, and these cases have shown a tremendous return on investment.

Over the last fifteen years or so we have brought home several hundred cars from the USA, and we are always looking for more. If you know of a Rolls-Royce or Bentley anywhere in the world, in absolutely any condition, please let us know. Distance no object, commissions happily paid.
