🏛 In quintessential Auld style, this abstract hillside landscape depicts an imposing tree in the foreground with a darker, elevated hill in the distance, towering above. A subtle combination of blue, purple, yellow, green and lighter shades, Auld depicts the wider landscape beautifully along with light and shade captured adeptly with trademark Auld care. A truly impressive work and one of very few originals available to own from this much celebrated artist.

An Aberdonian, who originally hailed from Boddam near Peterhead, throughout his lifetime celebrated, in paint, the wonderful characteristics of his city and surrounding countryside. His inspiration stemmed from the enjoyment of portraying the rocks of coast or hill, the contrasts of sea, river and loch, along with the infinite variations of North East weather. The city, with its many virtues, had been a fascination of Auld's which he captured so adeptly. The architecture, the institutions and industry have all been depicted in his many compositions. The valleys of Dee and Don have also provided many favourite images especially those notable hills, Lochnagar and Bennachie.

This is an extremely rare chance to own an original work which forms part of local and national art history that would grace any contemporary or traditional home. Auld is an iconic and much admired local artist and this stunning painting provides quite a talking point to enjoy and display.

📝 Eric Auld was one of the four renowned painters who put Aberdeen on the artistic map. Together with Donald Buyers, Bill Baxter and Bill Ord, Auld made up the group known as ABBO - an acronym formed to promote their work.

They held 14 exhibitions and were critically acclaimed, Auld being the most commercially successful of the group. Auld attended Aberdeen's Robert Gordon's College and in 1948 he attended the City's Gray's School of Art where he gained the Davidson Gold Medal and at the end of his post-diploma year he was awarded the Robert Brough Travelling Scholarship, which took him to France, Italy and Spain. Auld taught at Rosemount School and later at Aberdeen Academy before becoming principal art teacher at the city's Kincorth Academy, a much loved and admired teacher, he exhibited at Invercauld Estate on Deeside, Dundee and Glasgow to great acclaim; Auld's work was once described by critic and caricaturist Emilio Coia as "brittle, prismatic brilliance". More shows followed in Glasgow, Belgium and Birmingham and on his home turf at Aberdeen Art Gallery in 1965 Auld had many of his key images reproduced: 500 copies of his first city composition, Aberdeen 1, sold within a year and more than 40 editions of other works followed. Commissions included - the Ninian Central offshore oil platform, works for the Bank of Scotland, Grampian Television and Aberdeen Harbour Board among them.

A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Burgess of the Guild of the City of Aberdeen, Auld was affectionately known as 'Mr Aberdeen' creating a body of work extending to over 300 pieces spanning some 60 years! A local hero and artist of great significance.
