Description
Early 80’s Fantic 200 twin-shock trials bike
This is the 156cc Minarelli-engined “back kick” model, now much sought after for twin-shock trials.
It is now an “older restoration” which I fully rebuilt about 20 years ago. Since then it has been used literally only a couple of times each summer. Highlights of the restoration included:
• Frame and fork sliders powder-coated by Triple-S
• Fork stanchions re-chromed by Philpott’s Hard Chrome – a brilliant job making them better than original replacements
• Engine fully rebuilt with very good 2nd-hand crank, new piston rings, all new bearings and seals etc. Has run perfectly ever since and still does
• Seat professionally re-covered
• New old-stock genuine exhaust silencer
• New tyres (now 20 yrs old but tread still 100%)
• All new cables, bearings, etc. as required to make fully functional
The bike goes great as is and is very capable; wouldn’t take much to make is pass scrutineering to enter competitive twin-shock trials.
Not registered, but the frame number is clearly visible so with a dating certificate from a club and the MOT exemption (due to it’s age) it would be very easy to get an age-related V5 and have road-legal. Apart from trials use this would make it great to go along with a camper van: all the lightness and capability of a trials bike but that you can comfortably sit down on.
The bike is perfectly useable for fun as is, but there a couple of small issues to attend to for heavier or competitive use, relating to the front forks:
• Powder coating now lifting from sliders, touched up with red Hammerite
• Rubber upper bump-stops missing from inside forks, meaning there is a bit of a clunk sometimes when the front wheel leaves the ground: very minor problem and easy fix with a bit of rubber hose
• RH slider casting cracked at axle pinch-bolt: axle still held firmly and kind-of fixed with epoxy metal (see picture); this turned out to work fine so I’ve never got around to fixing properly. Would be cheap and easy to get welded if required or replacement sliders quite easily available
Both mudguards a bit tatty but they are generally consumables with trials bikes anyway!
With clean competition-ready examples of this model now regularly asking £2.5k - £3k, I have priced this one appropriately to reflect the few bits and pieces required to bring it up to scratch. It is far from a project and fine as it is for general fun use.
