We are excited to offer the unique opportunity to purchase our "Tonkin Tornado" Norton Manxman. A classic replica Manx Norton built for modern roads. This example was built and registered in 2018 with the engine, frame and brakes built by world renowned Andy Molner Precision Ltd. Built with lights, kick start, BTH electronic ignition and fitted with a Global Telemetrics Trident Cat 6 S7 Tracker. These bikes are highly sought after with this example having had three owners, the first of those being the supplying dealer and has covered just 130 miles. Included in the package are the original dealer brochure and spec sheets as supplied by the ex I.O.M racer and builder Steve Tonkins.
The Manx Norton is one of the most famous motorcycles of all time, and amongst the most highly regarded and sought after race bikes ever made. Not only fast and with superb road holding and handling, the Manx is also exquisitely proportioned and beautiful to look at. Add to this an exhaust note that is music to the ears of classic bike enthusiasts, and you have the ultimate package that powered a multitude of riders to podium finishes for over half a century!
Many classic bike enthusiasts have dreamed of owning their own Norton Manx. However, the original full-on racer would be difficult to ride on the road. So how about a slightly tamed Manx that is street legal, but just as capable of delivering power and thrills when you need it? The result is a truly classic motorcycle that is equally at home in town, and superb on fast twisty, country roads.
Steve Tonkin, Isle of Man TT winner and for over 30 years a respected classic bike restorer, has made this dream a reality with his new bike – the Tonkin Tornado. This is certainly no old fashioned “lash-up”, but is based around the renowned 500cc single cylinder Molnar Manx engine built to 1961 specification. With a top speed of about 140mph on Isle of Man gearing (with road gearing the top speed is 115mph) the new bike has a kick-start and electric lights to make it user friendly. This all-new motorcycle incorporates many hand-built components specially designed by Steve to complete the classic look whilst delivering modern build quality and reliability. This is a cafe racer comfortable enough for all-day riding.
Instead of using Reynolds 531, the frame is made from CDS because this is a better material for road use. The Roadholder forks have Manx two-way damping, as used by Steve in the Manx GP. The Fontana front drum is complimented by a Triumph rear conical hub that has been drilled to look like the Manx original. Ample power is effortlessly provided by the Molnar Manx DOHC 500 single, which produces 48bhp at the crank. The Norton gearbox uses a Quaife five-speed cluster. With ignition courtesy of a BT-H self-generating electronic magneto, the Manx always fires up after one or two expert kicks.
The ultimate cafe racer has to have looks to match the performance, so the “Sprint” tank is beautifully finished in classic Norton racing colours of silver with black and red lining. Brackets and engine plates have been cut by the latest high-precision water jet technology. The hand-bent exhaust pipe nestles neatly under the gearbox, while the gearchange and kickstart levers have been specially made.
So here it is: a Goldie on steroids, a Triton with added testosterone. The Tonkin Tornado is the ultimate street legal cafe racer.
