Antique Wooden Scribe Marking Gauge

Description

A traditional wooden antique marking gauge used by carpenters in woodwork. It is in good, strong working condition as far as I can tell (not that I have any idea how to use it!) with some signs of use which is to be expected with working tools of this age.

It features a a beam, a fence and scoring pin at the end of the beam. The fence slides up and down the beam and is secured with a brass thumbscrew. It won't have been used in several decades so it may be a bit stiff initially.

This would have belonged to my grandfather and probably my great-grandfather before him, both of whom were keen builders and DIY enthusiasts. There were two of these together and the other one is dated 1888 so there is a strong likelihood that this is of a similar age, although there are no apparent markings on this one so far as I can see. It is nonetheless an interesting piece that was potentially around at the same time as Jack the Ripper.

I have now inherited such a vast number of tools that some unfortunately need to be moved on to a new home where they can be used and appreciated.
