Description

1947 Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane Drophead Coupe.

Superbly restored with sympathetic upgrades for todays driving.

Armstrong Siddeley were possibly the first British manufacturer to introduce a new model after the end of WW2 with the announcement of the Hurricane Drophead Coupe in September 1945. The Lancaster Saloon followed in February 1946 with the Typhoon Sports Saloon completing the line up in September.
All featured a cruciform chassis with torsion bar front suspension, Girling hydro-mechanical brakes, a 2 litre (later 2.3) six cylinder engine and a choice of manual or pre-selector gearbox.

This is possibly the finest example of the model available today and looks magnificent in a rich dark grey with complementary pale grey leather and charcoal grey carpets.
The hood is black mohair and comes with a matching hood bag.

The Armstrong was the subject of a body off restoration in 2010/11 and was fitted with a Sapphire 236 engine with twin 1 3/8 inch SU carburettors, a five speed gearbox, power steering, alternator and a servo for the brakes.

The engine now sounds very sporting and revs very sweetly suggesting a marked power increase over the original softy tuned two litre unit.

Our road test did not disappoint with plenty of urge from the uprated engine, nicely weighted steering, a pleasant gearchange and reassuringly effective brakes. This is a car that is eminently suitable for some serious touring.

There is a comprehensive history with the car which includes all the restoration receipts as well as those for a recent recommissioning which has included rebuilds of the distributor, carburettors and braking system plus the fitment of electronic ignition.

Also included are maintenance and service manuals and some photographs of the car before and during restoration.

The paintwork remains in very good condition overall although the edge of the nearside front wing would merit refinishing.

The interior is lovely with seats, carpets and dashboard in near perfect order.

The brightwork is all in excellent condition.

The original toolkit is present under the dashboard. There is also a tyre pump, wheel brace and operating handle for the inbuilt jacking system.

2,606 Hurricanes were built between 1946 and 1953 and with fewer than 150 estimated to have survived it is a rare car indeed.

A video of the car can be viewed on the St Andrews Autos YouTube channel.

We would be willing to take an interesting vehicle in part exchange.

For more information and to arrange a viewing call James on the number provided or contact us via the website.

This is a superb motor car and quite possibly unique with this specification.

Thank you for reading.
