Police Investigator - PIP1 / PIP2

Location: Number of sites available across Avon & Somerset

Pay Rate: Negotiable depending on past experience

About the Role:

To conduct criminal investigations in accordance with Avon and Somerset Police procedures, ensuring that cases are thoroughly examined, evidence is collected legally and ethically, and suspects are investigated to support successful prosecutions.

PIP1: Entry-level investigator, focusing on routine investigations, case preparation, and supporting senior investigators.

PIP2: Experienced investigator, handling complex cases, supervising PIP1 staff, and making operational decisions in the field.

Key Responsibilities:

PIP1

Conduct initial investigations of reported crimes.

Gather, preserve, and document evidence according to legal standards.

Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects under supervision.

Prepare accurate and detailed case files for submission to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

Attend court as required to provide evidence.

Maintain clear, concise, and timely records of all investigative activity.

PIP2

Lead complex and sensitive investigations independently.

Mentor and supervise PIP1 investigators.

Make operational decisions regarding investigative priorities, resource allocation, and risk assessment.

Liaise with partner agencies, forensic teams, and legal representatives.

Present cases in court confidently and effectively.

Conduct quality assurance on investigative reports and evidence handling.

Essential skills and experience:

Retired or serving police officer / eligible candidate with relevant policing experience.

Completion of PIP1 (for PIP1 role) or PIP2 (for PIP2 role) investigator training.

Strong understanding of criminal law, evidential requirements, and investigative procedures.

Experience in interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects.

Ability to write clear and concise reports suitable for legal scrutiny.
