Description

ANTIQUE FRENCH TIAN, CLAY OR STONEWARE DAIRY BOWL, DOUGH BOWL, PANCHEON, MARKED ARJ 2, 39cm diameter 4kg, 1900s PROVENCE - FRENCH KITCHENALIA - REDUCED!

WILL POST - I can post this for £7.99 if paid for by bank transfer (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

One of several items acquired at a brocante in Dijon, Burgundy, we have used this as a rustic decorative display but this simple Tian bowl apparently originates from the Vaucluse region of Provence.
Known in France as a Tian and otherwise known as a Dairy Bowl, Dough Bowl or Pancheon, it’s typical of a Provençal cooking vessel for preparing a dish known as a Tian. They were also variously known to be used for mixing dairy products or dough.
Dating to the early 20th century (1900s) it’s pleasingly simple in design and colour with a glazed interior, upper edge and spout and unglazed exterior with a faint French grey glazed detailing line around the upper and lower edge of the trim.
It also has a mark to the upper edge that I read as ARJ 2 which I’m advised is likely to be an owner’s mark or maker’s mark.

This is still functional as intended but also makes a great display bowl, planter, fruit bowl or decorative piece of antique French kitchenalia.

In very good, sound, antique condition and still watertight it has wear and staining consistent with age and use but no damage - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
The glazed surfaces have an attractive worn patina but no significant chips.
The unglazed exterior surfaces are similar.
There is wear but there are next to no chips, the only one I have found is a small mark to the he end of the pouring spout that I actually think may just be a firing mark - see photos.
There is a larger impression near the lower edge but again this looks on closer inspection to be a dent in the clay from firing- see photos.
There are no cracks and there is no damage but there are areas of wear - see photos.
Stands well.
The spout is present and in good sound condition which is unusual for a bowl of this age.
The bottom has wear from use but is sound.
Marked to the upper edge as described.

Measures approximately:
19 cm tall,
39 cm diameter at it’s widest,
20.5 cm diameter at the base,
weighs about 4 kg.
