Description
2013 11" Apple MacBook Air - 4GB RAM - 128GB SSD - Intel i5 1.3GHz CPU - OEM charger - MacOS 15 Sequoia - excellent condition
Want a nice inexpensive MacBook running the next-to-latest version of the MacOS (15, Sequoia)? Well, I don't think you will find a better one than this!
This was my own 'daily driver' laptop for the last few years and never gave me a problem, I'm only selling it now 'cos I have a slightly better MacBook Pro. :)
As you can see, it is running MacOS 15 Sequoia- despite the fact that this 13-year-old Mac is SUPPOSED to run nothing later than MacOS 11 Big Sur! How so? 'Cos I used the excellent OpenCore (Google it for details) software to make a hacked build of this OS to install on/be customised for this model- and it works a treat. I thought there would be a few glitches running this unsupported version of the MacOS on such an old Mac, and that it would be rather slow, but neither of these things are true: I have never come across anything in Sequoia which does not run and- apart from an occasional VERY minor graphics 'artefact'- display correctly on it and always at a decent speed too.
Of course, you wouldn't want to try to run modern games or edit ultra-hd video or do high-end CAD on it or suchlike: but for the stuff that most people use such small laptops for 99% of the time- the web, e-mail, word-processing, playing music, video-chatting, etc- it is plenty fast enough... which just shows what swines Apple are for artificially limiting new versions of their OS to only run on recent Macs in order to pressure their customers to buy a new computer every few years! Grrr! :(
Bear in mind that while you could replace the present SSD with a bigger one if required you CAN'T upgrade either the RAM or battery- they are both 'glued-in'. This isn't a problem, though, as the installed 4GB RAM is (surprisingly!) enough to run Sequoia well and the battery is still pretty good, giving 2.5 hours of wireless Net access on a full charge. The included charger is not the original Apple unit but a 3rd-party one which looks almost identical. ;)
Cosmetically it is pretty darn good for its age: as my not-very-good photos (I need to get a better camera!) show the screen is perfect, without any mark or damage and uniformly bright and sharp, the keyboard is similarly great while the case has a number of minor marks/scratches/tiny dints but nothing major.
So, again, if you want a Mac on which to run heavy-duty apps on the latest version of the MacOS then this is NOT for you: but if you want a cheap-and-cheerful MacBook which runs the latest version of the MacOS well and will function as an up-to-date, compact, stylish 'netbook', well, this is perfect for ya. ;)
One additional point to bear in mind: while the current installation of Sequoia works perfectly as I've said, there is always the possibility that future upgrades will be problematic. Before installing any OS updates it would be wise to update the OpenCore software- both the MacOS and OpenCore send you pop-up messages when new versions are available for download, hence updating the latter before the former is easy to do and SHOULD avoid any problems... Still I cannot, obviously, guarantee that every attempted further update to the MacOS will work perfectly on this old, officially unsupported Mac- so Buyer Beware re. this. Remember, though, that even if such problems ever do occur free older, officially supported versions of the MacOS (such as Big Sur) could be installed instead, or a nice Linux distro... or even, if you must, Windows 10. ;)
The buyer can pick-up from me in Litherland (North Liverpool) and see it running before payment. Alternately, I will deliver myself around Merseyside for an extra fiver. :)
Otherwise I will send it by ParcelForce 2nd Class for an extra £10- and I will use one of the several old-but-like-new laptop bags which I have here as 'packaging' for it, hence the user will get one of those as a 'freebie'. ;)
