The 1885 Daimler Reitwagen ("riding wagon"), developed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Germany, is widely recognized as the world's first gasoline-powered motorcycle. Patented on August 29, 1885, this wooden-framed vehicle featured a \(264\text{\ cm}^{3}\) single-cylinder four-stroke engine producing 0.5 horsepower, achieving speeds of about 12 km/h (7 mph). 

Design & Structure: It featured a wooden frame and wheels with iron bands, designed as a testbed for their compact, high-speed internal combustion engine. It included small outrigger wheels (stabilizers) for balance.
Engine & Performance: The 0.5 hp engine used a hot-tube ignition system, running at 600 rpm.
First Run: Daimler's 17-year-old son, Paul, rode it for the first time on November 18, 1885, traveling 3–12 km from Cannstatt to Untertürkheim.
Safety Issues: The hot-tube ignition was located directly under the seat, which caught fire during its maiden voyage.
Legacy: While the original was destroyed in a fire in 1903, several replicas exist, including at the Mercedes-Benz Museum. It is considered the predecessor to the first four-wheeled automobile.
