Description
For sale is a somewhat unusual Tokai. It is a 1981 Goldstar Sound that started life as a Springy Sound. This is unusual as the earliest Goldstar Sound guitars were believed to appear in 1983, possibly late 1982. Everything about the body says that this is a Springy Sound. The date codes on the body and neck are December 1981. The switch dates to 1981. Essentially this guitar is both a Springy Sound and a Goldstar Sound.
The guitar would have been seized by UK customs in 1982, due to Fender taking a lawsuit against Tokai. Only upon the conclusion of the lawsuit was the guitar handed over to Blue Suede Music, Tokai's UK distributor.
The decal is the three piece decal, including the "fanatics" sentence below the brand and model lines. They have been applied over the finish, this is believed to have been carried out in England by Tokais distributor as a result of Fender winning their lawsuit (the font of the Springy Sound logo was too similar to Fenders). The area where the Springy Sound logo was originally placed and then removed can be seen in the right light, under the finish.
The guitar has just had a full stainless steel refret at the cost of £300 and is playing really well. The guitar is strung up with 12 gauge strings!
All of the electronics and plastics are original to the guitar. The tuners and bridge/saddles are also original. The tuners are the Final ProSpec models and the tuners are the Deluxe stamped models. The pickups are the highly respected E pickups.
The guitar caused some excitement on the Tokai forum when I first asked for information over there. It was agreed that this was a very rare and unusual Tokai, possibly a one off in its unusual nature and spec/colour combination.
It is no case queen and has been well played. There are plenty of dings, dents and scratches which I have tried to show in the photos.
