1980 Gibson J55

Description

The J55 model name was first used by Gibson in 1939 for a round-shouldered dreadnought with ebony fingerboard, moustache bridge, and sunburst finish.

The “relaunched” J55 was a very different Gibson Flat Top. Produced from 1973 - 1982, the Gibson J55 was designed to be a square shouldered alternative to the better known slope shouldered J45 and J50 models. Visually from the front it looks very similar, although the pickguard is particularly eye catching. The big difference is that the guitar has an arched back and efficient x bracing, so the guitar has the big sound and full bass associated with Gibson square shouldered dreadnoughts, but with a greater punch in the mid-range.

This 1980 Gibson J55 has Spruce top, lovely book matched Mahogany arched back, Mahogany sides and neck, with a Rosewood fretboard. For a 46-year-old guitar it's in very good condition, with no cracks, breaks or repairs. The top does have some play wear just below the scratch plate, and some small marks to the front of the guitar and to the shoulders (see last 6 pictures). The fretboard and frets are in great shape with only a tiny amount of wear showing on first 5 frets. The guitar comes complete with a non-original period hard case.
