Trace Elliot 715 SMC GP7 - Legendary Bass Amp Combo in Immaculate Condition
Lowestoft, Suffolk
£350
Description
Beautiful amp in beautiful condition; operates flawlessly and hardly been used. I doubt if there is a better one anywhere. It has been kept under its Trace Elliot cover so even a speck of dust can’t get to it.
The Trace Elliot 715 SMC GP7 is a legendary 1990s "Redline" bass combo amplifier, renowned for its 7-band graphic EQ and robust 150W solid-state power. Manufactured in England, it features the iconic "pimple" black tolex and delivers the classic, punchy Trace Elliot tone favoured for funk, rock, and reggae.
Core Specifications:
The 715 SMC GP7 is built around a 1x15" speaker configuration housed in a tuned cabinet. It utilizes a GP7 graphic preamp which allows for precise tonal shaping distinct from standard 3-band EQs.
• Power Output: Rated at 150 Watts RMS into 4 Ohms. Users frequently note it sounds significantly louder than its rating suggests, often comparable to modern 500W amps due to its efficiency and headroom.
• Speaker: One 15-inch Trace Elliot speaker (often cited as the same driver used in the legendary 1518 cabinet) paired with a high-frequency tweeter.
• Cabinet Design: Constructed from lightweight poplar plywood, the cabinet is tuned to 42Hz with an unobstructed bottom slot (bass reflex) for tight low-end response.
• Dimensions: Approximately 61cm (H) x 61cm (W) x 33cm (D) (roughly 24" x 24" x 13").
• Weight: Approximately 33–37 kg (73–82 lbs), varying slightly by specific production year and components.
Preamp and Signal Processing
The "GP7" designation refers to the 7-Band Graphic Preamp, the centerpiece of the amplifier's sound shaping capabilities.
• EQ: A 7-band graphic equalizer with +/- 15dB cut/boost at fixed frequencies: 50Hz, 100Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, and 5kHz.
• Pre-Shape Circuit: Includes a footswitchable "Pre-Shape" button that applies a classic Trace Elliot EQ curve (scooped mids, boosted bass and treble) instantly.
• Compression: Features a Soft Knee, Dual Band Compressor with self-adjusting, program-dependent attack and release times. This is often cited as essential for the amp's signature punch.
• Inputs: Dedicated Active and Passive input jacks with sensitivity switching to accommodate different bass types without signal degradation.
Connectivity and Features:
Designed for both stage and studio use, the 715 SMC GP7 includes comprehensive connectivity options typical of high-end 90s British amps.
• DI Output: An electronically balanced XLR DI Out with a switch to select Pre- or Post-EQ signal, allowing engineers to receive either the raw bass tone or the fully processed sound.
• Effects Loop: A series effects loop with True Bypass when disengaged, ensuring tone integrity when external pedals are not in use.
• External Speaker Output: A jack to connect an extension cabinet (minimum 4 Ohm load for the amp, 8 Ohm minimum for the extension cab depending on specific manual revisions, though generally 4 Ohms total load is the limit).
• Controls: Front panel includes Gain, Master Volume, Tuner Out, and individual sliders for the graphic EQ. Rear panel houses the power switch (often illuminated), DI lift/ground, and speaker outputs.
