Description
1977 Ford Capri Mk2 2.3 V6 Ghia Automatic. Finished in Bronze Metallic with beige upholstery and light tan vinyl roof.
Few cars capture the spirit of 1970s European grand touring quite like the Ford Capri Ghia. Conceived as the car that brought style, performance and comfort within reach of the discerning driver, the Mk2 Capri represented a significant evolution of Ford’s original sporting coupé formula, combining the long bonnet, short tail proportions enthusiasts loved with improved refinement, practicality and luxury. By 1977 the range-topping 2.3 V6 Ghia stood at the very top of the Capri hierarchy as a genuine executive sporting fastback.
This particular June 1977 example is an especially rare survivor. Finished in elegant Bronze Metallic and specified as a 2.3 V6 Ghia automatic, it represents the Capri in its most mature and refined Mk2 form. Even more unusually, it retains an exceptional level of originality and benefits from desirable factory features including headlamp wipers, a seldom-seen option that underlines the car’s high specification status when new. The car is currently displaying just 143,000 kilometres (88,900 miles) a remarkably low recorded figure that further supports its genuine and well-preserved character.
Accompanying the vehicle is a substantial history file containing original paperwork and service records dating all the way back to 1977, an increasingly rare and valuable asset that helps confirm the car’s authenticity and long term careful ownership.
The Cologne-built 2.3 litre V6 engine is widely regarded as one of the most characterful power units fitted to the Capri range. Smooth, torquey and perfectly suited to the automatic transmission, it transforms the driving experience from sporting coupé into relaxed continental cruiser, exactly as intended in Ghia trim. These cars were designed to cover distance in comfort and style while retaining unmistakable Capri presence on the road.
Freshly arrived from Switzerland, the car presents as a highly original and honest example that has clearly avoided the deterioration so often associated with UK-market cars of the period. It has already benefited from newly refurbished wheels and a matching set of new tyres, giving it an excellent visual stance and a strong starting point for sympathetic recommissioning.
Mechanically the engine starts and runs well, however the car is sensibly offered as a restoration project prior to regular road use. Opportunities to acquire Capris of this specification that remain so fundamentally genuine and unmodified are becoming increasingly scarce, particularly in Ghia V6 automatic form.
Supplied with NOVA documentation and all import duties fully paid, the car can either be registered on behalf of its new owner or retained as an opportunity to become its first UK registered keeper. Either route represents an appealing proposition for collectors, enthusiasts or restorers seeking a correct and original Mk2 Capri as a long-term investment grade project.
An increasingly rare chance to secure a high specification Capri Ghia with the desirable 2.3 V6 engine and automatic transmission, presented exactly as enthusiasts prefer to find them: honest, complete and ready revival. A wonderful basis for restoration and a model that continues to attract growing appreciation among serious Ford collectors.
