It is also a great general dry-fly, working well throughout the season, even when there is little sign of surface activity. The claret version is one of the most effective colours but It also works well when tied in black, red, orange, olive.’ T & S recommend size 12 and 10 hooks.

Available in the above colours sizes 12 and 10 on Veniard 'Osprey' hooks which a Glasgow tackle shop sells at 25 hooks for £3.50. Genuine seals fur, from when I tied for a Glasgow wholesaler in the 60's, 70's and 80's till the owner retired, apart from black which may be Veniard substitute. I tie the Mirage tinsel in the opposite spiral to the seal's fur.

A Glasgow tackle shop sells these legs at £3.99 /50. To keep costs down I tie my own and charge 2p a leg compared to 8p a leg I.e. 8p compared to 32p a fly. Considering the time it takes it is a bit of a loss leader.

Just a hobby. I have been tying flies for over 60 years and need to reduce my stock f fly tying materials.
