Description

Coming to auction at Concours House, Bradford-on-Avon, with Dore & Rees Motoring on Saturday 21st November.

Ferrari 250 GTO Aluminium Body

Few motor cars occupy quite the same exalted position in automotive history as the Ferrari 250 GTO. Widely regarded as one of the greatest sports racing cars ever conceived, the 250 GTO represents the very pinnacle of Enzo Ferrari's competition-car development, combining breathtaking performance, exquisite coachwork and an extraordinary record of success on the international racing stage.

Introduced in 1962, the 250 GTO was developed primarily to compete in the FIA's prestigious International Championship for GT Manufacturers. Based upon Ferrari's highly successful 250 GT platform, the GTO incorporated a sophisticated tubular steel chassis, independent front suspension, a live rear axle and, at its heart, the legendary 3.0-litre Colombo V12 engine.

The car's beautifully proportioned aluminium bodywork was developed through close collaboration between Ferrari and Carrozzeria Scaglietti, with aerodynamic refinement informed by extensive testing. The GTO's long bonnet, distinctive oval grille, muscular rear haunches and characteristic Kamm tail combined to create one of the most recognisable and enduring shapes in automotive design.

With production generally accepted at just 36 examples between 1962 and 1964, the Ferrari 250 GTO is among the rarest and most coveted of all Ferrari models. Its combination of competition pedigree, mechanical sophistication, unmistakable styling and extraordinary provenance has elevated it beyond the status of a collector's motor car to become one of the defining objects of automotive history.
