Description

On behalf of our client, we are seeking to recruit a UK Environmental Sustainability Lead on an initial 12-month contract. This key role will drive the organisation's environmental performance by shaping and delivering practical sustainability initiatives across areas such as Scope 3 emissions, biodiversity, and workplace environmental improvements. Working closely with cross-functional teams, the successful candidate will act as a catalyst for change, influence stakeholders at all levels, and ensure compliance with evolving UK and international environmental reporting requirements. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced environmental professional to make a meaningful impact within a forward-thinking organisation.

Role: UK Environmental Sustainability Lead

Pay: Up to 70 hour via Umbrella DOE

Location: Stevenage

Contract: Monday- Friday, 37 Hours per week, 12 Months Contract

IR35 Status: Inside

Security Clearance: BPSS Clearable, must be able to achieve Security Clerance

Essential Responsibilities

Lead the development, delivery, and reporting of environmental improvement initiatives aligned with the organisation's ESG, Sustainability, and Social Value strategy.Shape and implement business-focused Scope 3 greenhouse gas reduction activities, with emphasis on key emission hotspots such as waste, business travel, employee commuting/homeworking, and transportation/distribution.Drive biodiversity enhancement programmes across company sites, ensuring measurable improvements and alignment with wider environmental goals.Develop and coordinate workplace-based environmental improvement projects in collaboration with cross-functional teams such as Facilities Management, SHE, Sustainable Procurement, Travel, Site Management, and Engineering.Influence, guide, and support ESG and operational stakeholders to embed sustainability into business operations and decision-making.Convert environmental activity into clear outputs, KPIs, and positive business outcomes, ensuring improvements support both sustainability and wider business performance.Prepare and manage corporate environmental reporting, including Climate-related Financial Disclosures and Carbon Reduction Plans, ensuring compliance with UK legislation, regulation, and customer requirements.Collaborate with international counterparts or group companies to deliver consistent sustainability performance, reporting, and risk management, including expansion of Scope 3 coverage where needed.Lead change initiatives to improve carbon management, environmental performance, and resource efficiency, leveraging strong practical experience in environmental management systems.Advise senior stakeholders on environmental risks, opportunities, and best practices, ensuring the organisation remains compliant, competitive, and forward-looking in sustainability.

Essential Experience

Proven ability to act as a catalyst for change, with a strong track record of shaping and delivering practical, business-appropriate environmental solutions that drive measurable environmental and operational improvements.Demonstrated alignment with organisational values, including team spirit, commitment, integrity, passion, and innovation.Advanced environmental management knowledge and capability, equivalent to (or exceeding) ISEP Full Membership (MISEP) level; current ISEP Membership or evidence of experience at this level is essential.Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence, collaborate, and build effective relationships with colleagues at all levels across a large organisation.Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuous improvement, maintaining up-to-date understanding of sustainability best practices and evolving regulatory requirements.Significant, relevant experience within a large company or organisation, ideally within sectors such as defence, aerospace, engineering, or manufacturing (though not mandatory).
