Description

Position: Senior Geo-Environmental Engineer / Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Location: South Yorkshire (projects across the UK)

Contract: Full-time, permanent

This is a full-time, permanent role working as part of an experienced Sheffield-based team that supports seven UK offices and delivers projects nationwide. You will contribute to a wide range of geotechnical and land contamination projects across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, regeneration, and local government.

What to Expect

As a Senior Geo-Environmental Engineer, you will be involved in both the planning and delivery of project investigations, balancing office-based project management with site work. Your responsibilities will span geo-environmental and geotechnical investigations, data interpretation, report writing, geotechnical design, and site supervision for remediation and earthworks.

The role is ideal for someone proactive, detail-oriented, motivated, and comfortable working with a wide range of people.

Key Responsibilities

Completing Preliminary Risk Assessments (Phase 1 Desk Studies) and intrusive site investigations in accordance with national standards and industry guidance.

Planning and managing Phase 2 investigations, including health and safety considerations, CDM compliance, and procuring subcontractors.

Overseeing fieldwork activities, including supervising drilling and excavation operations, conducting gas and groundwater monitoring, sampling groundwater and surface water, logging soils and rocks, and carrying out in-situ testing.

Undertaking geotechnical design work, including slope stability assessments and settlement analysis.

Supervising remediation and earthworks projects, ensuring all works meet the approved specification, and liaising with contractors throughout.

Scheduling soil, rock and water samples for geotechnical and chemical laboratory testing.

Balancing time between site and office-based tasks, with occasional travel requiring overnight stays.

Producing factual and interpretative reports, earthworks specifications, remediation strategies, and validation reports.

Assisting senior staff in the preparation of fee proposals.

About You

Minimum BSc degree in Geology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or a related discipline.

7-10 years of relevant professional experience.

Solid understanding of CDM Regulations and experience in site management.

Experience supervising trial pitting, windowless sampling and other intrusive investigations, including managing subcontractors and ensuring on-site safety.

Rock core logging experience is beneficial but not essential.

Demonstrable experience supervising and validating remediation and earthworks projects, with a track record of ensuring compliance with specifications.

Experience in assessing, investigating, and treating shallow mine workings.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly technical report writing.

Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks.

Able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

Adaptable, flexible, and proactive.

Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with Openground software is an advantage.
