Job summary

Princess Alexandra Hospitalhave an exciting opportunity for a Medical Engineering Technician at the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. The service supports all hospital wards and departments across our sites in Harlow, Bishops Stortford, and Epping. You will be expected to work across these sites as required by the service to ensure the reliability and safety of critical medical equipment.

Main duties of the job

As a EBME Engineer, you will be responsible for the maintenance, calibration, and repair of a wide range of electrical and biomedical equipment used throughout the Trust. You will support clinical staff in the effective and safe use of medical devices, troubleshoot technical issues, implement software updates, and utilise IT systems to monitor and manage equipment performance. The role requires strong technical expertise, excellent problem-solving skills, and knowledge of industry standards and compliance requirements, including ISO 9001:2011. You will be expected to work flexibly across multiple sites, contributing to the efficient operation of the medical equipment library and participating in service improvement initiatives.

Job Roles & Responsibilities

To conduct full servicing, maintenance, calibration, and preventive inspections of a wide range of biomedical and electrical equipment, including diagnostic, therapeutic, and life-support devices, to ensure optimal functionality and compliance with safety standards. To perform acceptance testing, commissioning, software/hardware upgrades, and integration of new medical devices, providing advice on selection and evaluation of equipment. To maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all work, including maintenance history, equipment databases, and compliance documentation, ensuring traceability for audits and regulatory purposes. To investigate equipment involved in incidents, liaise with manufacturers and management, and report outcomes to regulatory bodies such as MHRA and NRLS, ensuring timely resolution of device-related issues. To manage inventory of spare parts and tools, maintaining control of ordering in line with budgetary guidelines while supporting continual improvement of medical equipment services. To collaborate closely with clinical and technical teams, delivering training, technical support, and guidance to staff, while working across multiple sites and contributing to service development and cross-functional projects.

Person Specification & Qualification

BTEC/ONC in Electronic Engineering (Level 5), Physical Science, or equivalent combination of qualifications and experience. Skilled in using test and measuring equipment for electronic and mechanical engineering tasks, including assembly, fault diagnosis, and calibration. Experienced in providing front-line customer service and staff guidance on equipment use. Knowledgeable of patient and staff safety risks associated with medical equipment. System Knowledge - Philips intrepid, B Braun Infusomat, Perfusor. Bodyguard PPMs and skills in commissioning equipment Disclosure and Barring Service Check
