LARGE MID CENTURY FRENCH PROFILE PORTRAIT BUST, PLAQUE, SCULPTURE OF CHARLES DE GAULLE, SIGNED F BINET, PLASTER CHALKWARE, 45x41cm - REDUCED !

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this from an antique dealer in Cambrai in the Nord region and have displayed it in a French themed home bar.

It is a vintage portrait sculpture or bust of French President Charles De Gaulle that apparently came from the clearance of the home of an avid militaria collector, particularly all things General De Gaulle, both war times and presidential times.

A substantial piece weighing about 4.6 kg, it’s finely cast in plaster and coloured to give a bronze effect finish (it was also described as alabaster and chalk by the dealer).

Mounted on a very worn wooden back the plaque is in deep profile and raised slightly in relief giving an atmospheric shadow line around the bust.

Signed to the base with a signature I read as F Binet (although it could be Binnet or Biniet perhaps) I have been unable to identify the artist.

Now worn with woodworm to the backing board and scratches and chips to the bust but still sound and imposing, it makes a great piece of decorative Francophilia, or Militaria, Political collectible, or even a film prop perhaps…

In good vintage condition with wear, chips, and woodworm consistent with its age and use - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
The bust is thick, heavy, sound and securely fixed to the back wooden panel.
It is screwed in place and just slightly raised in relief giving an attractive shadow line.
There is a slight wobble to the bust but it is very secure.
The surfaces are bright and sound but well worn with some chips, paint loss, and scratches down to bare plaster or chalk, most noticeably on the lower edge - see photos.
It has what I think is a painted finish giving a green bronzed effect.
The wooden plaque is sound but the veneer is coming away in places and there are numerous areas of woodworm - see photos.
I was informed this had been woodworm treated by the dealer and I have treated it also. I suggest the buyer for this may want to treat it again or even
re-mount the sculpture.

Measures approximately:
45 cm tall, 41 cm wide, 2 cm thick to the wooden back,
40 cm tall, 33 cm wide, about 6 cm depth to the bust,
Weighs about 4.6 kg.
