✅ How to Compost Horse Manure
1. Choose a Location
Select a well-drained, ventilated area away from water sources. Ideally, a spot with partial shade to maintain moisture.
2. Build the Pile
o Start with aged horse manure.
o Alternate layers of manure with carbon-rich materials (browns) like straw, dry leaves, or sawdust.
o Aim for a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of about 30:1.
3. Maintain Moisture
The pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge (50–60% moisture). Add water if dry, or dry materials if too wet.
4. Aerate Regularly
Turn the pile every 1–2 weeks to provide oxygen and speed decomposition.
5. Monitor Temperature
Compost should heat up to 130–160°F (55–70°C) to kill pathogens and weed seeds. Use a compost thermometer if possible.
6. Composting Time
Under good conditions, compost will be ready in 2–4 months. It should be dark, crumbly, and smell earthy.
7. Use Finished Compost
Apply to garden beds, mix into soil, or use as mulch for nutrient-rich, organic fertilizer.

⚠ Tip: Fresh horse manure can be too strong for plants (high in nitrogen), so composting it first is essential to avoid burning roots.
