The Autoimmune Psychologist
Living with an autoimmune disease can affect far more than your physical health.
The uncertainty, fatigue, pain, flare-ups and limitations can also affect your emotions, relationships, confidence, identity and sense of what the future may hold.
You may find yourself feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, anxious, exhausted or simply tired of having to manage a body that can sometimes feel unpredictable.
This is where my work begins.
I’m Matt Corey, The Autoimmune Psychologist, and I work at the intersection of psychology, stress, emotions, the nervous system, relationships and the immune system.
My approach is based on an emerging area I call Autoimmune Psychology.
Autoimmune Psychology does not suggest that your thoughts or emotions cause your autoimmune disease, nor that your condition is “all in your head.” Instead, it explores the psychological experience of living with autoimmune disease and the complex relationship between mind, body, behaviour, stress and wellbeing.
How I work
Together, we can explore the psychological and emotional dimensions of living with autoimmune disease, including:
My work draws on my training in psychology and counselling in Manchester and London, together with further training in Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN), Functional Medicine and the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol (AIP).
Over the years, I have worked with people living with conditions including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Ulcerative Colitis and Multiple Sclerosis, as well as other chronic conditions and autoimmune diseases.
I also bring together insights from psychology, stress research, mind–body science and psychoneuroimmunology, while recognising the important role of conventional medical care.
The aim is not to promise a cure or suggest that psychological work can replace medical treatment.
It is to help you better understand your experience of autoimmune disease, develop psychological and emotional resources and explore practical ways of living with greater resilience, self-understanding and quality of life.
A different conversation about autoimmune disease:
I believe there is an important space between purely medical explanations and the idea that disease is simply psychological.
That space is where Autoimmune Psychology belongs.
It asks questions such as:
What happens psychologically when your body becomes unpredictable?
How does chronic uncertainty affect your sense of self?
How do stress, emotions and relationships interact with the experience of disease?
How can you care for yourself without feeling that everything is your responsibility?
And perhaps most importantly:
How can you build a meaningful life, while living with an autoimmune disease?
My goal is to help people explore these questions with curiosity, compassion and evidence-informed psychological support.
