Kai Kristiansen Model 31 “Pige” Dining Chairs – Set of 4

A fantastic set of four original mid-century Danish dining chairs designed by Kai Kristiansen, model 31, known as “Pige” in IKEA’s early catalogues.

Designed in 1957 and manufactured by Schou Andersen Møbelfabrik, the Model 31 is one of Kristiansen’s most distinctive early chair designs, with its beautifully sculpted wooden frame, elegantly angled rear supports and wonderfully curved upholstered backrest.

These examples are particularly interesting as the Pige chair appears in the 1957 - 1967 IKEA catalogues, where it is shown alongside other furniture from the period. The catalogue describes the model as being available in solid teak and other timbers. We have retained a copy of the original catalogue page as part of the provenance for the set.

The chairs feature beautifully shaped teak frames with the characteristic splayed rear legs and sculptural angled supports rising to the curved backrests. The seats backs retain their period black vinyl upholstery, giving the set a fantastic authentic mid-century appearance.

The frames have a lovely warm colour and natural aged patina, with the usual minor marks and signs of use associated with their age.

Overall good original vintage condition. The wooden frames are structurally sound with some minor age-related marks and wear. The original black back upholstery remains intact and presents well overall, although one chair has a small historic melt/heat mark to the rear of the upholstered back — please see photographs. The seat pads have been professionally reupholstered.
We have deliberately left the original upholstery intact rather than re-covering the back of the chairs, both to preserve their originality and because we feel the period upholstery adds to their character.
