A beautifully resonant full-size vintage cello made in Czechoslovakia, professionally set up by a luthier and now sounding absolutely superb.

This is a genuine mid- to later-20th century Czechoslovakian instrument, likely dating from between the 1950s and 1980s, from the renowned Central European tradition of string making.

Czech workshops produced many of the finest student and advancing-player instruments in Europe during this period, and these vintage instruments are increasingly sought after for their warmth, reliability and character compared with many modern factory-made imports.

Likely produced in the historic Luby/Bohemian instrument-making region, an area with centuries of violin and cello-making heritage, these instruments were widely exported throughout Europe and the UK due to their excellent quality and tonal performance.

Recently professionally set up by a luthier including:

The cello has a rich, warm, mature tone with impressive resonance and projection. It is responsive, easy to play and would suit:

Construction & appearance:


• Full-size 4/4 cello (body length approx. 75.5 cm)
• Labelled “Made in Czechoslovakia”

• Attractive deep red-brown varnish

• Lightly flamed maple back with attractive figuring visible in natural light

• Traditional carved construction and arching

From the visible construction, arching, purfling and interior work, the instrument appears to be of solid wood construction rather than a basic pressed plywood student instrument, which is consistent with many better-quality Czech workshop cellos of the period.

Condition:


Very good vintage condition with the expected cosmetic signs of age and use. Structurally sound and recently checked professionally during setup.

Comparable fully set-up Czech workshop cellos regularly retail in specialist violin shops for substantially more.

This is a lovely-sounding instrument with genuine vintage European character — increasingly difficult to find at sensible prices.

This is not a cheap modern factory cello — it has the feel and sound of a well-made older European workshop instrument that has matured nicely over time.
