BMW X5 (E53) 3.0d Sport – Spares or Repairs (6-Speed Gearbox Issue)

Description

I am genuinely gutted to be selling my 2006 BMW X5 E53 3.0d (6-speed). I am listing it strictly on a spares or repairs basis due to an unresolved transmission fault. Prior to this, the car was running absolutely mint—the legendary M57 3.0-litre diesel engine pulls beautifully and it has been a fantastic car. I have spent well over £1,500 trying to solve this gearbox issue, but I have finally run out of time, so it has to go.

I am well aware of what this car is worth if stripped down. If I don't get a sensible price close to the asking, I am fully prepared to break it myself as the individual components and electronics are worth a premium sum—I would just prefer to save myself the hassle and sell it whole.

The Gearbox Fault & Work Carried Out
• The vehicle went into transmission limp mode (failsafe program).
• Hoping for a fix, I had the gearbox serviced using genuine ZF parts.
• It has been fitted with brand new genuine ZF solenoids, all-new genuine ZF internal seals, and fresh correct-spec fluid.
• Despite these high-end parts, it is still not shifting correctly. It will likely require a replacement used gearbox, a torque converter, or someone with specialist transmission knowledge to diagnose further.

High-Value Assets & Premium Parts Included:
• Perfect Working Modules & Electronics: Unlike most old X5s, the electronics on this car are flawless. All the small, high-demand modules (LCM light module, GM5 body control module, EWS, parking modules, switches, etc.) work perfectly and are easily worth £100+ apiece to anyone breaking these cars.
• Engine: Legendary 3.0d M57 engine in excellent health, starts on the key although battery is flat but will be fully charged. Easily worth £700+ alone.
• Wheels & Tyres: Fitted with premium tyres that have only done approx. 1,000 miles. The alloys have some age-related marks but are in decent overall condition (easy £300 value).
• Tow Bar: Includes a high-spec tow bar setup complete with the proper dedicated module for the car (worth £250 standalone).
Bodywork & Condition
• Overall: It is a 20-year-old workhorse, so it has age-related marks here and there.
• Bumper Damage: There is a localized scrape and small ding on the bumper where a 20-ton 360 excavator backed into it at low speed on a site. I was amazed at how well the X5 took the hit—it just left a minor scrape rather than flattening the front end!
• Interior: what you would expect for 20+ years but tidy.
