Part of our collection of kitchenalia we got this from a brocante at Saint-Quentin in the Aisne region and have used it to store sea salt.
It’s a wall mountable hand carved wooden Salt storage box, Salt Pig, Cellar dating to the early mid century and probably originating from Norway.
Folk art in style and intricately carved from a lightweight wood, probably Aspen, it has a hinged lid, cut notch for a spoon and untreated surfaces that are now worn and stained but still sound with a nice patina.
This is still useable as a salt box and also makes a great decorative piece of Scandi kitchenalia.
*
In good vintage condition with wear and staining - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
Clean and sound.
Quite lightweight but structurally very sound.
The surfaces are untreated and I have given them a coat of clear beeswax.
There are some marks and stains, some of which appear to be burn marks - see photos.
There is a notch cut to one side for a spoon
The back has a hanging hole for wall mounting or it is also freestanding.
The lid is in good used condition and still opens and closes as it should with secure pin fixings.
The interior is in used but sound condition - see photos.
I can find no maker’s mark.
