After three and a half very happy years together, it's time for me and Elvis, my much-loved 1998 VW T4 camper, to part company.
We've had weekends away, sunsets, wine, questionable campsite cooking and some fabulous mornings waking up with the back doors open to the view. He's 28 years old, has travelled 179,263 miles and, like most of us approaching 30, has acquired a few scars and the occasional quirk. But inside he's still looking rather fabulous.
Elvis is a 1.9 TD, registered on the V5 as a Motor Caravan, with 5 belted travelling seats. MOT until 21 January 2027, and the VWT private registration is included in the sale.
The interior is a smart, coordinated conversion with matching diamond-quilted front and rear seats, dark wood-effect cabinetry, fitted blackout/privacy curtains and plenty of storage. The rear seating converts into a generous bed, approximately small-double size and comfortable for two adults, and there's a removable table for dining/living space.
The kitchen has a sink with electric water pump and a fitted two-burner gas hob. The gas is currently disconnected and hasn't been used recently, so I'd recommend having the gas system checked before use.
Equipment includes leisure battery, electric hook-up and cable, 230V sockets, recessed interior lighting, TV, DAB/Bluetooth radio and exterior thermal screens. I'm also including the 12V cool box, awning/shelter, magnetic side-door flyscreen and levelling ramps, so he's pretty much ready to pack up and take away.
I've owned the van since April 2023 and maintained it throughout my ownership. There's a good history file with old MOT certificates going back to 2008 and receipts for maintenance and repairs. Recent work includes a new battery and new alternator.
As you'd expect from a 28-year-old T4, the bodywork isn't pristine. There are scratches, chips and areas of age-related paintwork/corrosion, which I've tried to show honestly in the photographs. The van was restored and customised before my ownership and a lot has clearly gone into creating its distinctive look, from the low-profile alloys and exterior styling to the retrimmed interior and coordinated camper conversion. It now has some age-related marks, but remains a really characterful, comfortable, practical and well-equipped camper with a particularly smart interior.
I'll genuinely be sorry to see him go, but it's time for someone else to take him on his next adventures.
