His original British & Irish Mountain Tops list covered hills over 2500 feet, plus a few lower hills, most of them over 2000 feet, but he soon discovered that there were a lot of smaller hills that were 'mountainy-feeling' and worth including, particularly in the West Highlands and Islands, and in Ireland. To cater for this he published two supplements in December 1962, again through Darien Press. The first of these extended the list down to 2000 feet, again with a few lower hills included, making a total of 1953 summits, while the second contained labelled photographic panoramas and an account of many of his hill days, both in Scotland and the Alps. The three books together are much sought after and knowledgeable readers will know the value of this complete 3 Part Set.
Hard Covers. Condition: Excellent-, Dust Jackets Condition: VG+. First Edition. 1954/1962. VG+. 3 vols, original green cloth gilt, silk bookmarks (some spots), some toning, illustrated with numerous folding photographs and panoramas. Heavy item (3 kg).
Overall, an excellent set. An idiosyncratic classification of British mountain tops, a most impressive and ambitious undertaking at the time, containing a wealth of technical information and personal account. After recovering from injuries received in World War One, Docharty (1895-1968) rediscovered an interest in the hills of home and began to explore his native Scotland. After completing the Munros and Tops in 1948 he began compiling a list of 2500ft/762m hills in Scotland. Over a period of 30 years, he visited all the summits on his lists and documented the climbs within each volume. The original list contained over 900 hills, including what we now know as Corbetts and all the 3000ft/914.4.m hills in England, Wales and Ireland. Docharty did not drive and relied on friends, bicycle or public transport to travel to and from the hills. To date no one is known to have reached all 1,982 tops classified in both lists. Again, all 3 Volumes in the Set Signed by Author.
