Description

"Published by Hollis & Carter, London, (1954). Signed and Inscribed on the title page by the author ""For Quintin Riley, with the very best wishes of the Author, David James - December 23rd 1954"". Bound in the publisher's hardcover cloth, titled in gilt to the spine. Spine faded, ends and corners bumped. Map endpapers showing Northern India with an inset map of India in 1857 to the front and South Africa to the rear. Closed edges with some foxing, but clean and tight in the main.

Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, VC, KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, KStJ, VD, PC (30 September 1832 – 14 November 1914) was a British soldier who was one of the most successful commanders of the 19th century. He served in the Indian Rebellion, the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War before leading British Forces to success in the Second Boer War. He also became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the post was abolished in 1904. He was known and referred to (but not to his face) as ""Bobs""."
