Description

Tempest G26 'Double Trouble' (1969) for sale: (International number GBR369)
In the UK a rare sixties tempest, and even rarer it goes sailing. Longevity & survival is down to it being:
(1) almost certainly built in epoxy rather than polyester.
(2) built by Mader in Germany.
(3) not like 70’s mader hulls – the cockpit floor is very stiff.
Different boat entirely to sail than a sixties UK built tempest – all round stiffer hull. It was last sailed on Kielder in May in plenty of wind - planning conditions – so had a speed test.

A tempest is a trapeze keelboat sailed like a large dinghy. Sailing weight is around 500kg of which 200kg+ is a lead bulb keel. 22 feet LOA, draft (keel down) 3 feet 7 inches. In sufficient wind they will capsize (broaching with the spinnaker etc), and will self-right in most circumstances. Designed in 1964 by Ian Proctor and sailed in the 1972 & 76 Olympics.

Picked it up in Germany in 2007 on the way home. It had clearly been back to Mader for upgrades as it has a modern diameter spinnaker chute, and the later fit out – alloy mast partners, harken blocks, windward sheeting traveller, current shape rudder, etc.
Been converted back to lift keel, and a crane built in the European style – much faster than the UK screw jack. The tempest system is not as refined as say a Kinsman – its more suited to occasional use – recovery in freshwater onto the trailer doesn’t require a deep water slipway.

The tempest is not suitable for drying out moorings, or to be moored in the open with the keel up – it’s been attempted, but not with good result. That said, the cockpit is self-draining, so on deep water moorings or other berth the boat drains itself.

Trailer is a UK built Tollbridge (Lymington?). Been refurbished with plenty of new steel, new bearings, modern hitch, recent tyres, spare wheel. German style spar carriers added – 4 new winch straps used secure to trailer – there in a box in a photo.
Set of good club-racing sails, original size spinnaker, and spare jib. Comes with a winter cover.
I stripped the antifoul off in 2012, and coated with Gelshield 200 as a primer/sealer (there was no osmosis given its likely epoxy), and then antifoul – which the ‘power washing’ weather in SW Scotland has mostly washed off. Topsides appear to be original. Decks appear to have been flow-coated, and a really good finish. Keel is sheathed and off a later boat. Trolley seen in one of the photos is not included – used to show the boat with the keel down & rudder in, and it’s much easier to step the mast with the keel down. Mast has been converted to swept-back spreaders, so backstay dispensed with.
I’ve 2 old tempests and one has to go, as only time/money for one.
Too much equipment and work done on the boat & trailer to be a giveaway Price: £900 which includes road transport north/south upto 300 miles - beyond that by negotiation. If you are wanting to make offers, you'll need to collect from Stranraer.
Only got one photo of the boat sailing, but its 2007.
