The Sound of History
The 6176 is Universal Audio’s flagship combination of two true classics:
The all-tube 610 mic preamp – derived from Bill Putnam Sr.’s legendary 610 modular console modules from the early 1960s. These were the heart of the consoles at United/Western Studios in Los Angeles and the famous Wally Heider “Green Board.” The 610 sound helped define records by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds), The Doors (L.A. Woman), Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, and countless others. Its warm, dimensional, slightly larger-than-life character is still prized today.
The iconic 1176LN Class A FET compressor – based on the highly regarded D/E revisions. Designed by Bill Putnam in 1966/67, the 1176 became one of the most-used compressors in recording history thanks to its lightning-fast attack, musical punch, and distinctive character. It has shaped countless hit records across every genre for over five decades.
Released in 2004, the 6176 was the first channel strip to put these two legendary circuits together in one beautifully engineered, hand-built unit (made in the USA). It remains a studio favourite for good reason.
Famous Users & Credits
This exact combination (and its component circuits) has been trusted by top engineers and artists including:
Adele (vocals on tracks produced by Paul Epworth – “you can credit Adele’s bright and crystal-clear, dulcet tones to the Universal Audio 6176”)
Chris Martin / Coldplay (Rik Simpson has noted Chris’s vocals often go through a 6176)
Pharrell
Norah Jones
Wyclef Jean
James Mercer (The Shins)
Engineers such as Vance Powell, Joe Chiccarelli, and many others
The 610 and 1176 lineage also appears on records by Van Halen, U2, and a huge list of classic and modern artists.
