Description

LARGE VINTAGE FRENCH CLACQUESIN ICE BUCKET, SEAU A GLACE, DOUBLE WALLED, LIDDED - 1970s FRENCH ADVERTISING - REDUCED!

WILL POST - I can post this for £7 if paid for by bank transfer. (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this from an antique dealer in Chatillon sur Seine, Burgundy, where it had apparently been acquired from the clearance of a local bar.

It’s a rare 1970s French ice bucket that was originally an advertising item for the famous french drink brand Claquesin and was probably distributed to bars and restaurants.

The french aperitif Clacquesin was invented in the 1860s by Paul Clacquesin, a pharmacist. It is a dark liqueur based on spices and plants, among which pine from Norway.

Clacquesin saw its high-days during the Années Folles (1920-1929) with production soaring to five million bottles a year.

WWII ended the glory days of Clacquesin but it is still in production today on a much smaller scale and the old factory has been classified historic monument.

This rather large ice bucket is made out of hard plastic/acrylic around which an illustrated thick plastic film has been wrapped with a Toulouse-Lautrec inspired illustration to both sides.

It is double wall insulated and has two secure handles, it’s original lid and a black baize type lining underneath preventing it from scratching the surface on which it is placed.

Very few of these have survived and those that have are certainly not in as good a vintage condition as this.

Now a little worn but still a bright, sound, substantial item functional for it’s original purpose on a drinks trolley, in a kitchen, as a champagne bucket or wine cooler without the lid, or perhaps in a Francophile home bar…

In very good vintage condition with light wear, tarnishing and scratches but no damage - please examine photos carefully for condition.

This has been used but I have washed and checked it over and I can’t find anything other than light wear and scratching - see photos.

The illustration is still bright and vivid.

Thick double walls for insulation.

The lid fits loosely and is a little worn and stained.

The handles are secure and in good condition with a little wear.

The base has a worn but sound and secure baize type liner.

Still watertight.

I can find no maker’s mark.

Measures approximately:

height with lid 22.5 cm,

height without lid 20.5 cm,

length handle to handle 24 cm,

diameter without the handles 21 cm

Weights about 1 kg.
