Description

THREE ANTIQUE FRENCH STONEWARE CONFIT POTS, CONFIT JARS, SALTING JARS, STORAGE JARS, PLANTERS, H23 20 & 17cm - 1900s FRENCH KITCHENALIA - REDUCED !

WILL POST - I can post this for £7.99 if paid for by bank transfer. (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got these from a brocante in Pougy, Champagne and have used them as a kitchen display.

This is a series of three substantial graduated antique stoneware confit pots or salting jars that apparently came from a local farm.

Roughly matching in construction and style with loose fit lids, they were probably used as confit pots for preserving duck in duck fat but they were also used as salting jars to cure or preserve foods in salt.

Hand thrown and dating to the early 20th century, they’re now worn and chipped but are sound and have their handles intact along with lids.

Still functional as intended and also have a number of modern day uses such as storage jars, planter, kitchen utensils jar, or just statement pieces of French kitchenalia…

In good, sound, antique condition with wear, chips, a hairline crack and staining consistent with age and use - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
A loosely matching set, the two largest being a good match, the smallest being similar but having a different handle design and glazed lid - see photos.
Stand well.
The surfaces, both inside and out, are glazed.
They are hand thrown and attractively irregular with bumps and dents and the largest having a slightly elliptical shape to the top - see photos.
No serious cracks or damage but there are numerous chips and scratches mostly to the top edges - see photos.

NOTE: The middle jar has crazing to the interior glaze but is stable, the smallest jar has a hairline crack visible across the interior bottom that is sound and does not show through at the corresponding point on the exterior of the bottom - see photos.

There is wear and there are a few firing imperfections giving the whole an attractive rustic patina - see photos.
The handles are present and in a worn and chipped but good sound condition which is unusual for a jars of this age.
Each has a loose fitting lid which is equally worn.
The lids fit loosely and are a rough match to the jars - see photos.
The interiors are glazed, worn and stained but sound.
The bottoms have wear and staining from use but are sound.
I can find no maker’s mark but there is a number 4 to the lid of the middle jar.

Measure approximately:
23 cm, 20 cm and 17 cm tall with the lid on,
21 cm, 20 cm and 17 cm long handle to handle,
18 cm, 16 cm and 15 cm diameter,
weigh about 5.4 kg in total.
