LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH WICKER COVERED GLASS DEMIJOHN CARBOY BONBON DAME JEANNE, CUT TOP - H51cm 49cm diameter - CHAMPAGNE VINEYARD - REDUCED!
Acquired from an antique dealer in Reims, Champagne, apparently this originates from a local vineyard.
It’s a genuine wicker and straw covered glass demijohn or carboy (Dame Jeanne or Bonbon as they are known in France).
These were used to store wine, but also sometimes oil or vinegar, and were wicker wrapped for protection.
The wicker is battered with woodworm and snapped areas but just about intact and very secure.
The glass bonbon is intact and has an applied glass ridge and an apparently very rare cut neck.
Quirkily misshapen, it makes a beautiful decorative antique - due to it’s fragile nature these are becoming increasingly rare…
In good antique condition with some wear, split wicker, woodworm and warping - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
When acquired this was thick with dust and has had a light vacuum, spray with woodworm treatment, and wax.
This is a big piece with a demijohn of surprisingly fine glass the little I can see.
The neck is intact and roughly cut.
The whole is in good sound condition.
The two handles are present and strong enough to lift it by but are worn with splits, cracks and loose ends - see photos.
The wicker basket is in similar condition with straw showing more in some areas and with numerous areas of old woodworm which I have sprayed with treatment - the buyer may also wish to do so as a precaution.
NOTE: This is an old, worn and battered piece, there are numerous areas of split wicker, treated woodworm, and straw. Small broken pieces of debris do drop from it and will undoubtedly have done so during shipping. All that said it is a robust, if tatty, piece and the disheveled nature of it adds to its decorative appeal - see photos.
Stands in an attractively misshapen manner.
The base is worn but sound.
I can find no maker’s mark.
Measures approximately:
49 cm diameter (this is irregular in shape so the diameter varies a little),
51 cm tall,
weighs about 7 kg.
