Description

A beautifully preserved antique Chinese freestanding display screen, featuring a large hand-embroidered silk panel mounted within a solid rosewood frame and base.
This type of screen was traditionally used in refined Chinese interiors for decorative display, room division, or to shield against draughts, and often showcased the owner’s taste and status.

The silk embroidery, likely from the renowned Suzhou region, depicts a richly detailed ceremonial procession: attendants carry banners bearing Chinese characters, while others shoulder a palanquin along a sloping path amidst trees and bamboo. The artistry is exceptional, with fine satin stitch and subtle colour shading giving the scene depth, movement, and texture.

The embroidery is set into a warm-toned rosewood frame with a turned stretcher between splayed feet for stability. The craftsmanship of the joinery and the quality of the timber are consistent with late Qing to early Republican period work (circa late 19th to early 20th century).

Dimensions:

Overall: approx. 39 inches high × 22 inches wide (99 × 56 cm)

Embroidery panel: approx. 24 inches high × 17 inches wide (61 × 43 cm)

Condition:
The silk retains good colour for its age, with some gentle fading and a few light marks to the ground fabric. The rosewood frame is sturdy and in very good antique condition, with a pleasing natural patina and only minor surface wear.

Historical note:
Freestanding embroidered screens of this type were not only decorative but also served symbolic functions, often commemorating auspicious events or celebrating prosperity. Procession scenes such as this were popular in late imperial China for their association with celebration, honour, and high status.
