We got this antique truffle jar or bocal from a brocante at Vix, Burgundy, and added it to our collection of truffle jars however it apparently originally came from a farmhouse clearance in Provence.
Known locally as a Bocal, it’s artisan blown in thick green irregular glass and dates to the early 1800s.
It’s typical of jars from that region used for preserving truffles and they were also probably used as pickling jars for cornichons or as confit pots for preserving duck in duck fat.
Unusually large it is now worn but intact and is functional as intended or has a number of modern day uses such as a vase, French kitchenalia collectible or decorative statement display piece of antique glassware…
Increasingly rare due to their fragility this is very well priced when compared to the few others I have found for sale or sold…

In very good, sound, antique condition with wear and scratches consistent with age and use - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
Stands well if a little crookedly.
The glass surfaces are attractively irregular with some bubbles and ridges from the blowing process.
There is some wear and scratching but no damage and most of the imperfections showing on the photos are actually from being blown - see photos.
The upper edge is irregular, worn and a little rough but has no chips - see photos.
The interior is worn but reasonably clean and sound.
The bottom has a rough cut pontil mark and has wear but is sound.
Watertight.
I can find no maker’s mark.
