Description

Cloisonné / Chil-bo (meaning seven jewels) is an ancient decorative enameling technique where colored enamel paste is filled into small compartments—or cloisons-created by thin metal silver ribbons soldered onto a metal base. The piece is fired in a kiln, polished, and gilded, creating detailed, vibrant, and glassy designs.
The principle material used for the
"chil-bo" enamel is a pigment of silica used in making glass. Pure silver is first coated with this enamel and the product is then heated in a furnace at a temperature of 800°C-900°C. At this temperature the glass material melts coating the metal base.
The value of "chil-bo" products lies in their never changing, brilliant, translucent colours.

70 + 99 (or 700 + 999) mark:
-70 or 700 (70% Silver): This refers to the body or base of the object. It is a lower purity alloy, often used for structural strength in items like spoons and forks.
-99 or 999 (99.9% Pure Silver): This refers to "Fine Silver". In cloisonné, this ultra-pure silver is typically used for the fine wires that create the partitions for
the enamel. Pure silver is preferred for this because it is highly malleable and does not tarnish as easily under the high heat of the kiln.
