Description
This is an attractive, antique, copper coal scuttle with companion scoop. It has a genuinely, beautiful, antique patina.
The scuttle is raised upon a tapering, circular stand.
It has been hand made and hammered to create the copper texture of Arts and crafts.
The rivets holding the copper handle and rear handle are very stylish.
There are solder repairs with added copper plates at the hinged area which actually add to the character of the scuttle and show that it was a precious item that deserved repair.
I have only come across another scuttle in this shape, with the irregular hexagonal rear and flat angular top.
The coal scoop is an added bonus, as few survive due to the constant shovelling of coal on to the fire.
The copper scoop is quite substantial and reinforced. The reinforced riveted area at the rear of the scoop adds to the attraction.
It has a rather attractive wooden turned handle . The handle has an aged split but remains stable and firm. The scuttle has a strip of copper attached to the interior of the roof, fashioning a shelf on which the scoop can be placed.
The rivet mounts at the handle and the waved cut on the top of the scoop follow the same waved pattered and I believe the two items were made together.
The pair give a look stunning as fireplace accessories and look the part holding logs or coal..
