Artist information
The enigmatic British artist Francis E Jamieson was an English painter who, after a holiday to the Highlands of Scotland, became obsessed with painting highland landscapes and became one of the most prolific artists of his time. The paintings of FE Jamieson were so fashionable he was contracted to paint exclusively for various furniture stores painting scenes on furniture. Jamieson is believed to have painted under eleven different artist names so he could sell more of his paintings undetected by his employers. These aliases include J McGregor, Graham Williams, Henry Stewart, and W Richards. There are other pseudonyms that include Aubrey Ramus, Stanley Penn, A de Perrin and others.
Mr. Jamieson was largely a painter of Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Born in 1895, Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. He was an ambitious man and keen to sell more works than through just one shop. In order to do this, he started to sign his works with pseudonyms other than his own name, in order that he could sell his work to a wider audience. It worked and it is considered that Jamieson at least 15 different pseudonym names on his paintings.
Location information
Loch Katrine is a freshwater loch in the Trossachs area of the Scottish Highlands, east of Loch Lomond, within the historic county and registration county of Perthshire and the contemporary district of Stirling. It is a popular scenic attraction for tourists and day-visitors from Glasgow and nearby towns; fly and boat fishing for trout are permitted on the loch from spring to autumn. Loch Katrine is the fictional setting of Sir Walter Scott's poem The Lady of the Lake and of the subsequent opera by Gioachino Rossini, La Donna del Lago.
The Trossachs is an area of wooded glens, braes and lochs lying to the east of Ben Lomond in the Stirling council area of Scotland. The Trossachs form part of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The area has long been visited by tourists due to the relative proximity of major population centres such as Glasgow and Stirling, and remains popular with walkers, cyclists and tourists. Scenic boat rides on Loch Katrine are popular with visitors: the steamer SS Sir Walter Scott, launched in 1899, remains in operation. The Great Trossachs Path, one of Scotland's Great Trails, is a 48 km route suitable for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It runs between Callander in the east and Inversnaid on the banks of Loch Lomond in the west, passing along the northern shores of Loch Katrine and Loch Arklet.
