Description

LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH GREEN GLASS BONBON, DEMIJOHN, CARBOY, DAME JEANNE, HAND BLOWN GLASS, CUT TOP, 44cm tall 37cm diameter - 1700s BURGUNDY VINEYARD - REDUCED!

WILL POST - Due to it’s size and fragility postage is expensive I’m afraid but I can post this for £18 if paid for by bank transfer (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this from an antique dealer in Chatillon sur Seine, Burgundy and used it as a feature on a terrace but apparently it originated from a local vineyard.

It’s a genuine hand blown green glass demijohn or carboy (Dame Jeanne or Bonbon as they are known in France) dating to around the late 1700s.

It would have been used to store wine and also possibly oil or vinegar.

It has very fine glass with attractive bubbles and ridges from production, a couple of scratches from use, but no damage or cracks.

The neck has an applied glass ridge and an apparently very rare cut neck.

Quirkily misshapen, it’s a beautiful decorative antique in it’s own right but also still useful perhaps as a decorative interior or exterior piece, lamp base, terrarium, or vase…

Due to their fragile nature these are becoming increasingly rare…

In very good antique condition with some wear but no damage, cracks, or chips - please examine photographs carefully for condition.

When acquired this was dirty and wrapped in the remains of a straw filled carton. It’s since been washed and the interior has had a dishwasher tablet in it for several hours. The result is probably as clean as you can reasonably get.
This is a big piece with surprisingly fine glass.
I don’t know it’s volume but do know that when full it is easily strong enough to hold it’s contents (also so heavy as to be barely liftable!).
There are no cracks or chips but there is wear and some scratching which I’ve tried to photograph, anything that looks like a crack is probably a glass ridge or due to photography.
The whole is in good sound condition.
The green glass is clean and clear when held up to the light with attractive bubbles and blowing ridge imperfections visible.
Stands in a slightly misshapen manner.
The neck is intact and roughly cut.
The base is worn with a concave dimple.
I can find no maker’s mark.

Measures approximately:
37 cm diameter,
44 cm tall,
weighs about 2.5 kg.
