Description

ANTIQUE FRENCH COPPER PUMP, BICYCLE TYRE PUMP - COQ MANUFACTURE FRANCAISE D’ARMES ET CYCLES SAINT ETIENNE - 31cm tall - 1900s - REDUCED!

WILL POST - I can post this for £4.50 if paid for by bank transfer (Note - we only accept payment in cash on collection or by bank transfer if delivery agreed - no PayPal, card, or courier payment).

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this from a brocante at Reims in the Champagne region and added it to our decorative French copper collection.
We initially thought it to be a garden or vine sprayer but have since found it to be an antique tyre pump for bicycles and light motorcycles made by MANUFACTURE FRANCAISE D’ARMES & CYCLES SAINT ETIENNE.

It has a brass emblem or plaque with a French Coq from the Manufacture Française d'Armes et Cycles de Saint-Étienne which is a historical French company established in Villeboeuf, Saint-Étienne, on November 10, 1885.
This company was known for manufacturing sporting guns and bicycles under the "Hirondelle" trademark. Initially, the company focused on selling and repairing British bicycles and tricycles, with its own bicycle production starting on a smaller scale in March 1888.

A quality piece that I am advised dates to the early 1900s, it is now very worn but has an attractive patina and makes a great decorative copper, automobilia or cycling collectible.
It’s also a superb display item, steampunk decorative, or even up-cycle to a lamp…

NOTE: I don’t think this is working as a pump, the handle still pumps but doesn’t produce any pressure, however it’s in good condition with staining, wear, scratches, dents and knocks consistent with it’s age and use but no damage - please examine photos carefully for condition.

This has just had a quick wash but I’m sure it would polish up well if so required.
Solid and sound with no structural damage.
The copper is thick and strong with years of wear - see photos.
There are brass fittings.
The pump is present and moves as it should but creates no force.
The wooden handle is worn an split but still securely fixed - see photos.
The bottom is worn and dented but sound and still manages to stand reasonably straight - see photos.
There is an attractive brass plaque marked as described.

Approximate dimensions:
31 cm tall,
16 long handle to spout,
11 cm diameter,
weighs about 1 kg.
