Description
A 1830s Empire mahogany French bergères Aux Dauphins Empire armchair in the manner of Pierre Bellange (1760-1844). The mahogany frame with sabre front legs continuing as arm supports, the back legs raked. The arms curved and carved with a mythological dolphin’s head at the front and a scale motif at the back. The square back slightly curved, the uprights a continuation of the back legs. (Description is from home research)
The foot-stall was not originally intended for this arm chair but goes nicely with it. The base is coming away from the top but this is an easy fix with some screws with larger heads. It likely dates from 19th century and is made of mahogany. The pine cone feet appear, to me, to be a later edition as they have been halved instead of a full pine cone.
It was last upholstered in the 1970s so is In need of reupholstering. The mahogany is in good condition but will need a bit of tlc as there are some dings - scratches. In one of the images in this listing some of the wood has come off from the back of the chair but only slightly. On the left arm where the arm meets the back rest there is some slight cracking but doesn’t effect the structure of the chair.
Height (floor to the top of the backrest): 93cm
Width: 59cm
Depth of the outside of the chair from the back to the end of the dolphin finial: 49cm
Seat depth: 47cm
Seat width, from the front: 53cm
Death width, from the back: 43cm
I’ve taken the condition of this chair into consideration as it needs some money spending on it but once it has been cleaned up it appears very similar chairs are selling for £2500+
