Description
Vintage Tripletone Mono Valve Amplifier
Tripletone were a UK-based manufacturer who produced amplifiers from the 1950s until the 1970s. Date codes on some of the components in my amplifier would suggest it is approximately a 1969 build. It has been in my possession for around 30 years, during which time it has barely been used and has spent most of that time in dry storage. I feel now is the time to find it a new home.
There are no identifying markings on this unit other than "A Tripletone product 272709".
The amplifier is in good condition for its age (please see photos for more info). I have powered it up and run it for a few hours and it appears to be in working order. Just be aware of some age-related imperfections, for example slightly dirty potentiometers on the volume and tone controls, leading to some crackles when moving these controls. Treatment with a suitable potentiometer cleaner may well solve this issue.
Please note that the amplifier chassis is open on the bottom (see photos). I believe these amplifiers could be used in pairs to provide stereo output, and presumably would be expected to be fixed to a suitable baseboard in the desired (mono or stereo) configuration. In stereo configuration I believe the shafts of the power, tone and volume controls could also be linked (hence the holes in the rear of the chassis). Nevertheless, due to the open base of the chassis, live terminals/wires are accessible underneath - so I would strongly recommend that the amplifier chassis be fixed to a suitable baseboard prior to power-up. PAT testing would also be recommended and chassis earthing (a simple modification) may be a requirement in order to pass. Please check with a qualified electrician.
Making all of this clear as it is a near-60-year-old product which will only meet the electrical safety requirements applicable at its time of manufacture and not the undoubtedly more stringent requirements for new products today!
One final piece of safety information is that valve amps use high voltages, so appropriate caution should be exercised.
Hope that covers everything. Any other questions, please ask.
