Few families of Italian sports cars have achieved the enduring reputation of Alfa Romeo’s 105 Series. Introduced in the mid-1960s, this beautifully engineered range combined Giorgetto Giugiaro’s crisp, elegant styling with Alfa Romeo’s sophisticated twin-cam engines, excellent chassis dynamics and rear-wheel drive. The result was a generation of cars that could be used every day, yet possessed genuine sporting credentials. The story began in 1963 with the Giulia Sprint GT, designed at Bertone by the young Giorgetto Giugiaro. Its compact 2+2 coupé body was an immediate success, characterised by a long bonnet, short tail and the distinctive 'scalino' or step-front nose. Beneath the elegant coachwork was an equally impressive mechanical package; Alfa's all-aluminium 1,570cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine, five-speed gearbox, four-wheel disc brakes and a sophisticated live rear axle.

The Giulia Sprint GT subsequently evolved through a number of versions from the Sprint GT Veloce to the later 1750 GT Veloce and 2000 GT Veloce. In 1965 the range was joined by the GTA, with lightweight aluminium body panels and extensive competition modifications, the GTA became a formidable touring car which achieved considerable success in European racing. The GTAm development took the concept even further, with dramatically widened bodywork and much more powerful engines. These cars established the 105 Series as a genuine competition platform rather than simply a stylish road-car range. The 105 Series represents the point at which Alfa Romeo's sporting heritage, Italian design and advanced engineering came together in a form that could be enjoyed by ordinary enthusiasts, one of the rare classic-car families in which almost every version has genuine enthusiast appeal.

This RHD 1966 Giulia Sprint GT Veloce has enjoyed a long and active life in the hands of motorsport enthusiasts, being developed over the years for serious long-distance competition use. We understand the Alfa spent much of its early life in Guernsey, where an enthusiastic owner transformed the Giulia into a capable long-distance rally car. Considerable expenditure was invested. Works were undertaken by Wellanier Motors, Peter Smart Classic Alfas and TT Motors Racing, with a Protune Racing engine fitted as part of the programme.

Approximately £56,000 has been invested in the car, demonstrating the commitment lavished upon this particular Sprint GT and its intended use. The Giulia has successfully entered a series of demanding international events such as the Panama to Alaska Rally, Classic Safari Challenge and Inca Trail. Maintained to a high standard, and finished in Alfa-Romeo racing red with contrasting white front valance panels, the car has an undeniably purposeful appearance. The paintwork would now benefit from some improvement in areas, but the overall effect remains striking.

An opportunity to acquire something rather more unusual than a conventional restored example, this Giulia been prepared, developed and genuinely used for the purpose for which it was intended. Its participation in some of the world's most demanding long-distance rallies adds appeal, while its 1960s Italian styling ensures that it remains every inch the charismatic Alfa Romeo.
