Description

My name is Christopher and I am an experienced private tutor offering one-to-one tuition in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I teach Scottish National Qualifications at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher, depending on the subject. I have been tutoring since 2019 and now work full-time as a private tutor, with many new students coming to me through word-of-mouth recommendations, alongside pupils who return for further tuition. I am a current PVG Scheme member for work with children.

My academic background is in Molecular Biology, with experience in Biochemistry and Microbiology. I previously carried out PhD research at Heriot-Watt University and also hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Regenerative Medicine.

Subjects and levels

I work with pupils from primary school through to S5 and S6, home-educated students, and adult learners, to provide support with:
• Mathematics up to Advanced Higher and A level.
• Biology up to Advanced Higher and A level.
• Chemistry up to Advanced Higher and A level.
• Physics up to Higher and GCSE.
• College courses in Maths and the Sciences, including University Access courses for medical and other science disciplines.

Lessons can focus on improving general understanding of course material, keeping up with current coursework, revising difficult topics, preparing for assessments or developing exam technique.

My approach

Many pupils understand a topic much more easily when it is explained calmly and thoroughly in a one-to-one setting rather than in a busy classroom. I aim to identify where a pupil is getting stuck, break the topic down into manageable steps and explain it in a way that makes sense to them. I adopt a flexible approach and tailor my explanations to each pupil, as different people often need a topic presented in different ways. My goal is for pupils to understand the material fully and, ideally, begin to enjoy subjects they may previously have found difficult.

For the first session, I normally ask pupils to bring some recent schoolwork and let me know which topics they are finding difficult. This gives us a clear starting point and allows me to plan future sessions around their individual needs.

I prepare work for each lesson, but current schoolwork, upcoming tests and any specific difficulty the pupil wants to address will always take priority. I also revisit previous topics regularly so that any gaps in understanding can be identified and addressed to help develop confidence in these areas.

My aim is not simply to help pupils complete individual tasks, but to improve their understanding of the material, build their confidence and develop their ability to solve similar problems independently.

Availability and lessons

Tuition is available:
• In person at the pupil’s home across West Lothian and nearby areas, including Livingston, Bathgate, Armadale, Linlithgow, Bo’ness, Kirkliston, South Queensferry, Currie and Balerno, depending on distance and availability.
• Online.
• During the day, in the evenings and at weekends.

In my experience, regular weekly sessions lead to the most consistent progress and help establish a routine that maintains momentum. Pupils booking a regular session will have the same time reserved for them each week.

I charge £35 for a one-hour weekly session.

I am currently accepting new pupils for the 2026-27 academic year. When contacting me, please include:
• The subject and current level.
• The pupil’s year group.
• Your general location.
• Preferred days and times.
• Any particular topics or concerns.

Please contact me through Gumtree, by text message or by telephone. I am often teaching and may not be able to answer telephone calls immediately, but if you leave me a message, I will reply as soon as I am available.
