Description

Hello!

I’m a qualified secondary English teacher with over 10 years’ experience supporting students of all ages. I am currently completing a PhD in American Literature, have taught in secondary schools across Scotland, Asia and the Middle East, and am a PVG Scheme member. I’m passionate about helping learners to gain confidence in their own reading and writing. No matter your age, exam, coursework or assignment, I’m happy to help.

Tutoring Experience:
In Scotland I have 3 years’ experience teaching BGE to Advanced Higher, specialising in National 5 and Higher as an SQA marker. I have tutored privately since 2018, and have proudly overseen improvements in all my tutees, many achieving A grades. I have a thorough knowledge of writing and composition and, having prepared many students for speaking tests, can help with solo talks or speaking assessments.

I have worked for 7 years as an English teacher across Japan, China and the UAE, teaching English to students aged 4-18 and providing private tuition to adult speakers. I have helped students at all levels prepare for English exams across Cambridge, Edexcel IGCSE/A-Level, American Common Core and the AP curriculum. I have supported tutees with dyslexia, anxiety disorders and ADHD/ASD, always ensuring my students feel safe and comfortable. I have also worked with PhD-level ESL students, proofreading theses and papers before submission.

I’m also an unabashed Shakespeare geek, and won a prize for distinction in my Shakespeare course as an undergraduate. If there is any aspect of Shakespeare you need help with, I’m ready to get stuck into some Macbeth witchery or Capulet melodrama!

Tutoring Approach:
It’s important that my tutees feel comfortable studying one-to-one with me outside a classroom environment. Not everybody feels confident in academic writing, and that’s ok - together we can work to develop this. By talking through the text with my tutee and finding out what engages them, I usually find that they have understood the material well, but have simply struggled to put it into words. Once we have worked on vocabulary, critical reading and composition skills, my students are usually surprised by their progress, and how much they are capable of on their own.

No matter your learning style, we will find a lesson structure and study schedule that works for you and helps you see results. I will also provide as much homework as you feel you can handle, if you think you need the extra practice. I tutor online or person; rates are £40 per hour.
