The RD 80 MX is based on the RD 50 MX moped. In 1980, it was the first 80cc street motorcycle from Yamaha in Germany in the then newly created class of light motorcycles (then class 1b, now A1). The enduro sister model with the same engine was the DT 80 MX.

The RD80 MX was available in white-blue, white-red, black, red and blue. The RD 80 MX was replaced in 1982 by the more powerful, water-cooled RD 80 LC. 16,373 vehicles of this type were registered in Germany.
